They say if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. And this July, 16 footballers from Thomas Rotherham College are hoping to kick start their sporting careers as they take a trip to the bright lights of New York City.
This will be the fifth stateside trip organised by the college’s PE teacher, David Woodcock, with a mixed-ability squad taking part in the nine-day expedition from 3rd to 12th July.
Along with keen footballers who are currently studying for their A-levels or BTEC diplomas, they will also be joined by players from TRC’s GOAL academy programme.
Back Row L-R: David Woodcock; Tom Napper; George Gibson; Alex Lee; Jacob Brady; Charlie Pryce; Pride Mushonga; Jack Webb; Morgan Thorpe.
Front Row L-R; Declan Martin; Tom Jennions; Owen Nightingale; Lewis Mills; Cole Starkey; Josh Ratcliffe; Jake Simpkins.
During their time in New York, the squad will play three games against local clubs; Brooklyn Italians, Massapequa SC and Downtown United.
Experiencing an international tour, the players will get the chance to show off their sporting skills on some of New York’s finest pitches including on Randall’s Island and the unique Brooklyn Bridge Pier Five – let’s hope Lady Liberty is cheering them on that day.
Following in the boots of TRC alumni, some of the young lads will be looking to gain scholarships in the US and a visit to Hofstra University is planned for them to check out the campus and sporting facilities there.
As the city that never sleeps, there will be no time for rest as the days spent off the pitch will be used to trek around the Empire State and take in some of its most iconic sites.
From the world famous skyscrapers and billboard-bible in Times Square, to the moving 9/11 Memorial and museum, there will also be chance to relax on some of Long Island’s best beaches along with a trip to the water park.
And of course, the sports team couldn’t go all the way to New York without a visit to the Yankee Stadium.
But this year, they will get two bites of the Big Apple as they revel in the magic of a New York Yankees baseball game on Independence Day, followed by a soccer derby American style as the New York Red Bulls battle Major League rivals New York FC..
While making plans for the future in the city of dreams, the players and staff at TRC would like to thank Westcourt Financial Services Ltd for their sponsorship to allow them to make it a reality.
