Call for former Montagu Cup finalists for competition’s 125th anniversary

Have you ever played in a Montagu Cup final? Well, you’re needed for the team sheet! But this time you can leave your football boots and shin pads at home.

Next year marks the 125th anniversary of the Montagu Cup, thought to be the oldest football competition still to be played at the same venue.

The committee would like to invite as many finalists from yesteryear to attend as special guests for the 2022 final on Easter Monday, 18th April at Mexborough Athletic ground on Hampden Road.

For any players who have passed away, the committee would like to invite one relative to represent them.

Montagu Cup

The first final took place in 1897, so there could be thousands of men in South Yorkshire who have played on the hallowed pitch at Hampden Road.

It is hoped that we will have a group photograph for the past finalists ahead of kick-off.
There is also a special publication expected to mark this occasion.

Please contact the committee by email on montagucup@gmail.com or via Twitter or Facebook before 31st December 2021.
