For more traditional start to Christmas, book your tickets to the annual carol concerts at the magnificent Holy Trinity Church in Wentworth village.
Decorated in all its seasonal splendour, Wentworth Church will be spreading Christmas cheer with two festive concerts this year.
On Sunday 8th December, the York Waits travel from North Yorkshire to present ‘When Icicles Hang By The Wall’ at 3.30pm. Tickets are £15 or £10 for concessions.
With a heritage dating back to the 14th century, the York Waits were night watchmen before they turned to music full time. Although their guard duties diminished, they continued to keep the night watches in the weeks leading up to Christmas, playing at various points to mark the hours and wake the citizens.
Today’s York Waits have revived the band as it was in its heyday in the 16th century, playing a wide repertoire of period European music as well as their own arrangements of popular dance and ballad tunes.
If you are not too sure what a noyse of shawms is, or maybe a saggbut, curtal, crumhorns or hurdy-gurdies, you may be very interested to see (and hear) these instruments played by The York Waits during their concert.
Then on Saturday 14th December, Sheffield-based Escafeld Chorale will perform ‘Peace on Earth: the Christmas message in words and music’ at 4pm. Tickets are £10.
Escafeld have performed their very popular Christmas concerts at Wentworth Church for over 30 years. They are a mixed choir of around 50 members and have been established for over 50 years. They sing a wide range of music from the choral repertoire, and are equally at home with full-scale requiem masses and unaccompanied part-songs.
They have been led by musical director, George Parsons, since 2022. A former boy chorister at King’s College, Cambridge and a music graduate of The Queen’s College, Oxford, George has worked in music ministry for churches in London, Sheffield, and Wakefield.
