Good egg Rawmarsh bikers gear up for annual children’s ward Easter visit

Did you know the Easter bunny wears leathers and rides a Harley?

For the last 60-odd years, kind-hearted members from Rawmarsh & District Motorcycle Club have given up their Easter Sunday to deliver chocolate treats and a cheque to Rotherham’s poorly children.

And this year, they’re looking for more riders to join their convoy riding through the town to Rotherham Hospital and then on to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospital.

The tradition started in the 1960s when the club decided to raise funds for the Rotherham children’s ward. This then led to them buying and taking Easter eggs for the patients and staff. In 2019, the club decided to double their efforts and take more eggs to Bluebell Wood.

Club member, Keith Hopkins, who helps organise the Easter egg run, is hoping this year the club will egg-cede last year’s donation with the help of the public. Bikers and spectators will gather outside the Queen’s Hotel on Kilnhurst Road in Rawmarsh at 10am where club members will have collection buckets at the ready.

Whether you’re a motor hog or would just like to marvel at the motorbikes on display, come along and support this worthy cause.

If you’re interested in joining Rawmarsh & District Motorcycle Club, they meet once a month at the Queen’s Hotel. Members have varied interests, from racing to touring to speedway. Over the years they have travelled the country getting to know the different circuits.

They’ve also visited many international circuits such as the Isle of Man TT. They tend to organise one European trip a year and have previously ridden through the Carpathian Mountains, circumnavigated the Baltic Sea, and paid a memorial visit to the Somme Battlefields on its 100th anniversary. This year they are hoping to visit Ireland and Poland.
