Rotherham’s Royal British Legion members are looking for new volunteers to support this year’s Poppy Appeal.
This year’s appeal will run from Thursday 24th October until Remembrance Sunday on 10th November. Remembrance activities are organised annually by the Royal British Legion to honour the contribution of our Armed Forces community, past and present.
But it takes an army of volunteers to run it. You don’t need to have served in the armed forces to volunteer for the Poppy Appeal. Even if you can spare just one hour during the appeal, that will make a difference.
We remember those who lost their lives on active service in all conflicts, from the beginning of the First World War right up to present day. We also remember all those who have served to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life, across all faiths, cultures and backgrounds from Britain and the Commonwealth.
Wearing a poppy is never compulsory but is greatly appreciated by those who it is intended to support. Buying from an RBL poppy stall helps them provide lifelong support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families.
This year, the Royal British Legion, in partnership with the Ministry of Defence, led the UK’s commemorations to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This involved a series of events in the UK and Normandy.
They have also revealed a 64-strong team, who are all wounded, injured and sick serving personnel and veterans, to represent Team UK at the Invictus Games in Canada in 2025.
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, there is an event on Saturday 5th October between 10am and 12pm at in Drummond Street Tesco, Rotherham Town Centre. This is where you can register to be a volunteer for Rotherham East, West & Wentworth areas.
Or if you can’t make that date, contact Cheryl Jones on 07580 041424 or Karen on 07738 290646 for other areas.
