Weston Park Cancer Charity celebrates three years of free transport service

Leading South Yorkshire and Derbyshire cancer charity Weston Park Cancer Charity is celebrating three years of providing their free transport service for cancer patients across the region.

Driven by a team of volunteers, the service provides a friendly and comfortable environment for patients to get to their appointments at any of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals sites without the worry and stress of traffic, parking, and travel costs. It’s also a chance to meet others who are going through similar journeys.

Since its launch in April 2021, Weston Park Cancer Charity’s free transport service has helped more than 450 patients, made over 2,300 journeys, and the volunteer drivers have given more than 8,100 hours of their time. The charity regularly receives outstanding feedback from people about their experience.

Angus, aged 77 from Sheffield, receives treatment at Weston Park Cancer Centre after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022 and regularly uses the charity’s free transport service.

He said: “I knew when I was diagnosed that I would receive first-class care from Weston Park. The main issue for me was getting to the hospital from where I live in High Green in Sheffield.

“The bus drivers are all so friendly and I enjoy hearing their stories and equally, sharing mine. It makes the whole experience easier, as by the time I’ve got to the hospital we’ve already had a bit of a laugh on the way.”

The minibuses currently pick people up from several stops in the Meadowhall area, Barnsley, Rotherham, and Chesterfield.

Kane Feek, patient transport and support officer at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “We understand that our patients are going through extremely hard times in their lives, so if we can do anything to help ease the process of getting to the hospital, we will do it.

“It is thanks to our supporters, fundraisers, and corporate sponsors which enable us to keep the service operating for our patients. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of our free transport service over the past three years. Let’s continue to support the one in two of us affected by cancer.”
