Art at the Altar returns for Hens Teeth’s 20th year

Two decades ago, someone quipped that artists in this corner of the world were “as rare as hens’ teeth.”

That impertinent tongue-in-cheek remark provoked something brilliant in the late Gillian Tyler, an award-winning illustrator from Penistone.

Together with ceramist Sarah Jones-Morris, Gillian set up Hens Teeth, a collective of local creatives determined to prove that creative talent can grow in unexpected places.

Since 2005, they have organised the annual Art at the Altar festive fair at St John’s Church in Penistone, curating a rare event that’s part exhibition, part market, part festive gathering.

Every November, the atmospheric church is transformed into a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, and community spirit. Think twinkling lights, handmade bunting, and tables filled with one-of-a-kind treasures from talented makers, designers, and artists.

What started as a homespun and hand-knitted event has been refined over the last 20 years to become a much-anticipated tradition on the festive calendar for people from across South Yorkshire and beyond.

Sadly, Gillian passed away last year after a short battle with the rare degenerative brain condition, CJD. However, her presence is still felt in every corner, and this milestone 20th anniversary is as much a celebration of her legacy as it is of the community she helped nurture.

The event is now managed by a small team of volunteers including former designer Lynda Jennings, glass artist Tina Green, and retired accountant Samantha Hardman who Gill brought on board to help balance the books.

Running from Thursday 20th until Sunday 23rd November, this year you’ll find ceramics that tell stories, textiles spun with love, hand-printed cards, glinting jewellery, woodwork, metalwork, paintings, prints, and so much more.

Every item on sale is crafted by skilled hands, and every stall reflects the spirit of its maker, many of whom return year after year, drawn by Art at the Altar’s unique atmosphere and loyal following.

Hens Teeth have around 60 regular contributors on their books, some of whom are hobby crafters while others run their own businesses and hold their own art exhibitions. Members range in age from young creatives in their 20s right up to a fabulous lady in her mid-80s who knits nativity scenes each year.

But Art at the Altar isn’t just about beautiful things. Each year, ten percent of all sales is donated to a chosen charity, making every purchase a gift that gives twice. They’ve raised almost £84,000 over the years, donating to a variety of causes including Barnsley Foodbank, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

This year, donations will go to support Penistone Church’s roof appeal as a thank you for being great hosts over the last 20 years. Reverend David Hopkin has championed Hens Teeth from the beginning and has given them free rein to curate an event that sings off the same hymn sheet of providing a space where all are welcome.

Whether you’re looking for unique presents, festive inspiration, or simply a dose of Christmas spirit, there’s never been a better time to stop by, support local makers, and be part of something truly special.
