Have a Scream at Wentworth Woodhouse

This October, the spooktacular Wentworth Woodhouse reveals a side you’ve never seen before as it plays host to a brand-new Halloween experience.

Zombies, ghosts, and ghouls brush a little too close for comfort on the two Halloween trails, Spooky Time and Scream Time, which run from Monday 20th October until Sunday 2nd November.

The largest privately owned home in Britain has always been a place of splendour, mystery, and power. But behind Wentworth Woodhouse’s 18th-century façade lie stories of footsteps that echo when no one is there, of ghostly figures floating through the shadowed corridors, and headless spirits that thunder through the grounds.

This Halloween, those stories come to life with this all-new indoor and outdoor experience featuring terrifying experiences and scare actors who remain in character.

Whether you bring your little monsters for family-friendly Halloween fun or a spine-chilling encounter after dark, Wentworth Woodhouse promises an experience that lingers long after you’ve left.

Spooky Time (Families & Children aged 7+)

Families with younger children are invited to explore Spooky Time, a gentler Halloween adventure at a pre-dusk time slot with lots of tricks and treats.

Become a police officer and solve the crimes room by room with an interactive game looking for clues. Each stop on the trail reveals a little piece of Wentworth Woodhouse’s incredible history: tales of lords and ladies, of grand banquets and secret passages.

There will still be zombies and skeletons but it’s not as terrifying.

Scream Time (Strictly for 15+)

When the sun sets, Wentworth becomes something else entirely with Screamtime. Visitors will be greeted by a Georgian-era police officer who will brief them that a curse has taken hold of Wentworth Woodhouse and the terrifying secrets are buried deep within its walls.

Step into the candlelit hush of its grand halls and follow a trail that winds through the house’s most atmospheric rooms including the library, haunted bathroom, drawing room, ballroom and bedroom. But beware: the deeper you venture, the more the house reveals of its haunted past and horrifying scenes.

Outside, the trail continues and visitors are dared to walk along Arachnophobia Alley to the murderous axeman and zombie groundsman. They will be sure to give you a fright. Watch out as the graves have been disturbed and you don’t know what is lurking there.

Scream Time is an unsettling journey into Wentworth’s supernatural side – immersive, chilling, and absolutely unforgettable.

Visitors of all ages will be able to calm their nerves in the Scare Village with hot chocolate, marshmallows, and delicious themed street food.

Devilish drinks will be available at the Spookeasy Bar alongside Halloween decorations and fire acts. There will also be a headless man and guillotine – perfect for those Halloween photo opportunities.

A House Like No Other

Built for the powerful Wentworth family, this stately home boasts over 350 rooms and a history stretching back centuries.

Its sheer scale once symbolised wealth and ambition, but such vastness also leaves space for shadows, secrets, and stories that refuse to die.

There are many skeletons in the family’s closet, from the ill-fated Thomas Wentworth 1st Early of Strafford who was beheaded for treason, to William ‘Billy’ Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, the 7th Earl Fitzwilliam who was controversially accused of being a ‘changeling’ switched at birth, and his son Peter, the 8th Earl, who was untimely killed in an air crash with JFK’s sister, Kathleen Kennedy.

The house has been the subject of various paranormal investigation shows and event, with people reporting to have seen or heard ghostly goings on.

Records show that sightings of ghosts have been reported at the House since the 1800s, with maids spotting what they thought was the ghost of the Earl of Strafford.

Neil Power, events delivery officer at Wentworth Woodhouse, has conducted paranormal events in the past. He says: “I was a total sceptic before I came here. I am often here late at night and early in the morning and things have happened. I believe I heard someone tell me to get out when I was in the Earl of Strafford’s bedroom one night.

“I can’t explain it, the house was empty. We’ve heard doors slamming, chairs moving and footsteps.”
