Leaving the Armed Forces can be one of the biggest adjustments a person and their family will ever face.
For many veterans, the structure, routine and camaraderie that once came naturally can suddenly disappear, often leading to feelings of loneliness, isolation and a loss of purpose. Families can experience these changes too, particularly when adapting to civilian life, new communities or the challenges that can come with retirement from military service.

That is why charities like the Military Community Veterans Centre (MCVC) in Rotherham are so important to making sure no member of the armed forces community in South Yorkshire ever feel they have to face civilian life alone.
MCVC provides a welcoming and supportive environment where veterans, serving personnel and their families can reconnect with others who understand their experiences Through regular activities and informal social support, the charity helps people rebuild confidence, improve wellbeing and stay connected after service.
Based at Silverwood Miners Welfare Resource Centre in Dalton, their programme includes a regular breakfast club on a Tuesday, weekly community walks around Clifton Park on a Wednesday, and friendly drop-in sessions every Friday – all designed to bring people together and reduce the isolation that many former service personnel can face after leaving the military.

Sometimes, simply having somewhere to go, someone to talk to or a reason to get out of the house can make a life-changing difference. Whether its chatting over a breakfast butty and cuppa, or getting things off your chest while walking in the fresh air, the charity creates opportunities for people to build friendships and feel part of a supportive community once again.
Supporting this mission is the launch of Move to Grid, a new online portal that maps activities, services and events available across the wider South Yorkshire region throughout the week.
The platform makes it easier for veterans and their families to discover local support, social opportunities and community groups close to home, helping more people access the connections and support they may need.
Whether someone is looking for wellbeing support, social groups, fitness sessions or local advice about finances or housing situations, Move to Grid brings everything together in one accessible place.

The MCVC team also organise regular social gatherings, events and day trips for members. Coming up this summer are a visit to the Blackpool Air Show on Saturday 8th August and a trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Thursday 20th August.
Their weekly sessions are as follows:
- Breakfast club at Silverwood Miners Welfare – Every Tuesday 10am-12pm
- Weekly Walk in Clifton Park Museum – Every Wednesday 1pm (meet behind the museum at 12.45pm)
- Drop-in session at Silverwood Miners Welfare – Every Friday 10am-12pm
If you would like to attend, you can just turn up on the day. Alternatively, you can contact the MCVC team who will meet you beforehand and introduce you to the group.
