Barnsley kickboxer Sonny Greaves has added his name to South Yorkshire’s growing list of world champions.
The 21-year-old claimed the ISKA 65kg world title in Wolverhampton, defeating Spanish champion Nico Melgar by unanimous decision on a War Fight Series show.

For Sonny, the belt marked the reward for 14 years of dedication, discipline and resilience.
“I started out at The Combat Academy in Wombwell when I was seven,” he said. “I didn’t even like kickboxing at first. My parents just wanted me to commit to a sport. Eventually I came to love it and now I’m a world champion.”
Sonny’s rise hasn’t been straightforward. After winning English, British and European titles, he waited almost a year for his world title chance due to injuries and withdrawals.
“Those ten minutes flew by, but they were worth the wait. Everyone knows that in combat sports you can win by knockout. That’s why we fight to the end. Even if one fighter has clearly won most rounds, there can still be a knockout. I answered everything Nico threw at me. My shots and kicks went unanswered.”

Away from the ring, Sonny lives in Darfield with his parents and works full time in the family rendering business. The dream is to turn professional and compete on the world’s biggest stages, such as ONE Championship and Glory Kickboxing.
His coach, Mick Crossland from The Combat Academy, believes he’s ready.
“Watching him grow from a boy into a remarkable young man has been a privilege. His commitment to his own development has never wavered. He listens, learns, and shows a level of courage and character that sets him apart. Sonny is a vital part of our kickboxing family and is an inspiration to others.”
Sonny’s proud mum Kay says his dedication to kickboxing continues to amaze their family. “He’s grounded and humble, never boasting, always focused, and forever pushing himself giving 100 percent to everything he does. His determination and strength of character inspire us and we’re immeasurably proud seeing him accomplish his goals.”
Already a multiple-time champion, Sonny continues to collect medals worldwide, including double gold at the ISKA World Championships in Australia where he fought competitors from Ukraine, China, Australia.
Next up is a WKU world title fight in Cannock in March where he will face Turkish opponent Emre Agyel.
