Rotherham Markets’ big move into new market hall

After three years of transformation work, Rotherham Markets is preparing to enter an exciting new chapter this July as more than 45 traders move into the town’s newly redeveloped market hall.

The long-awaited relocation marks a major milestone in the wider regeneration of Rotherham town centre, with extensive works having been underway since 2023 to modernise the market offer while safeguarding its future for generations to come.

The former outdoor covered market has undergone a complete overhaul and is now the home of the new Market Hall, creating a contemporary trading space designed to meet the needs of both traders and shoppers.

Combining modern facilities with the traditional community spirit that has defined the market for generations, the new market hall offers a fresh new setting for one of the town’s most treasured institutions.

Visitors will notice a significant change in the market’s layout. Traditional table-style stalls have been replaced with purpose-built trading bays, giving businesses a more professional and flexible space from which to operate while creating a cleaner, more attractive experience for customers.

The addition of a permanent roof structure with solar panels will provide protection from the elements and create a more comfortable shopping environment throughout the year.

When the doors open on Friday 10th July, shoppers can expect familiar faces and an impressive variety of stalls, as well as new businesses amongst the 45 stalls making the move into the new market hall.

Whether you’re shopping for fresh produce, clothing, footwear, electrical goods and household appliances, flooring products, flowers or cards and gifts, you’ll find it all under one roof.

Alongside established favourites such as Staniforths the Baker, two traditional butchers a popular deli counter, visitors will find a brand-new fruit and vegetable stall offering fresh seasonal produce.

Milk from the Hills has moo’ved their milk and milkshake vending machine over to the new site, with a gelato counter set to open later this summer, while a new sweet stall will add another family-friendly attraction, helping to create a vibrant destination for shoppers of all ages.

The market will also continue to offer a selection of personal services, including hair and beauty treatments and acupuncture, alongside specialist services such as a traditional cobbler, phone repair services and clothing alterations.

With a seating area, toilets and cafes and takeaway food outlets serving breakfast, lunch and light refreshments throughout the day, the new market hall is a great place to stop for a bite amidst all that shopping.

To mark the launch, there will also be some family events taking place on Saturdays in July. On Saturday 11th, meet Toy Story’s Buzz, Woody and Jessie or have a go at slime making. On Saturday 18th, there will be craft sessions, while the raucous Granny Tourismo is set to cause chaos on Saturday 25th. These events are all taking place between 10am and 1pm in the new market hall.

So as summer arrives and the finishing touches are put in place, Rotherham residents are being encouraged to continue supporting their local market and the independent businesses that call it home. Every visit helps sustain local jobs, supports family-run enterprises and strengthens the town centre economy.

How to access the new market hall

Visitors will find the new market hall’s main entrance on Eastwood Lane, directly opposite Rotherham College, making it easy to access from the town centre. Parking is available on Drummond Street or there are a limited number of street parking spaces on Eastwood Lane.

This entrance incorporates the new public realm area with landscaped greenery, seating and a large outdoor screen.

For shoppers with mobility requirements, pushchairs or those arriving from the nearby bus station, temporary step-free access is available via Henry Street.

Whichever entrance you take, there will be plenty of signage and wayfinding around the town centre to direct visitors while they get their bearings.

Access to the site will become even easier in the future when the town’s new library opens in this autumn, with two additional pedestrian access points connect the new market hall with the library.

The current indoor market will be closed from Friday 3rd July for approximately 18 months while refurbishment is carried out to provide a long-term home for traders and customers. Plans include a new roof, replacement flooring and a modern heating system, as well as the creation of a food and beverage outlet plus refurbished shop units on Eastwood Lane and Howard Street.

Once completed, the refurbished indoor market and new market hall will work together to provide a modern, flexible and vibrant destination at the heart of Rotherham town centre, ensuring the market remains a key part of community life for years to come.
