For anyone who has lived through cancer treatment, either as a patient or a carer, the journey can be as emotionally exhausting as it is physically demanding.
While hospitals focus on chemotherapy schedules, surgeries and scans, there’s another side to recovery that often goes unnoticed: the need to feel human, cared for and in control again.
That’s where one small but powerful charity is making a world of difference in reminding people they are more than a diagnosis.

Aurora Wellbeing in Mexborough offers free beauty therapies, hairdressing and emotional support to people with cancer and to the loved ones who care for them.
Patients are entitled to six complimentary treatments, available during treatment and for up to a year afterward. Carers, who often put their own wellbeing aside, can access two free treatments in recognition of the vital role they play.
From manicures, Dermalogica facials and waxing to brow and lash tinting or a relaxing hot stone massage, the therapies provide far more than a moment of pampering. They help rebuild confidence, restore dignity and offer meaningful human connection at a time when isolation can feel overwhelming.

The physical effects of cancer treatment can deeply affect self-confidence. Skin may feel dry or sensitive, hair may thin or fall out, and people may struggle with a sense of lost identity. The charity’s trained therapists understand these challenges and tailor each treatment carefully.
The service also includes professional hairdressing and practical guidance on managing hair loss, along with access to a wig bank offering natural-looking options for those experiencing temporary or long-term changes.
While beauty therapies bring immediate relief, the Aurora team also recognises the importance of emotional wellbeing.

They run a buddies club once a month, as well as regular coffee mornings and scone and cake afternoons where people can share experiences, ask questions or simply listen. Carers, too, find solace here, connecting with others who understand the pressures of supporting someone through illness.
A touch of kindness, a soothing treatment, or a new hairstyle can help someone feel like themselves again. And sometimes, that’s just the therapy people need most.
Aurora Wellbeing is based behind Mexborough Montagu Hospital and is open Tuesday to Saturday. For more information, call 01709 460663 or visit www.aurorawellbeing.org.uk
