New sensory trail launches at Wentworth Church

You’ve no doubt walked past Wentworth’s historic church many a time.

But this summer, visitors can experience it in a whole new way with a newly launched sensory trail designed to awaken sight, sound, touch and smell.

Welcoming around 19,000 visitors each year, Wentworth Church is already a valued destination for individuals, families and groups. This new trail, funded by a grant from the Church of England’s disability fund, has been developed to make the space more inclusive and engaging for all visitors.

The sensory trail features six interactive stations located throughout the church, each connected by a simple map to guide visitors on their journey.

Every station highlights a different aspect of Christian faith and church heritage, encouraging reflection through touch, sound and visual elements.

Themes include the beauty of stained-glass windows and the animals portrayed in them, the meaning behind traditional hymns, the symbolism of the Last Supper and the Resurrection, and the significance of herbs and flowers often associated with worship and remembrance.

From soft toys and sacred oil scents to an olive wood cup and plate from the holy land and the church’s rare Father Willis organ, church warden Janet Sinclair-Pinder has created two trails that will appeal to both children and adults.

In addition to the indoor experience, the trail extends outdoors, inviting visitors to connect with nature as an expression of God’s creation. This element encourages moments of quiet reflection while engaging with the natural surroundings of the church grounds.

To ensure accessibility, braille and text-to-talk versions of the trail materials will be available, enabling visitors with visual impairments to fully participate. The aim is to create a welcoming environment where everyone can explore faith and history in a meaningful, sensory-rich way.

Wentworth Church is open daily, offering a place of welcome, discovery and peace for all who wish to visit.
