Montagu Cup Final Returns this Easter

Easter Monday marks the return of the Montagu Cup final as two Rotherham teams battle it out to claim the historic trophy.

Swinton’s The Gate Inn FC will take on Wickersley CC FC at Mexborough’s Fireparts Stadium on Monday 6th April.

The Montagu Cup is the oldest football final still played at its original location. First established in the 1896-97 season, next year will mark its 130th anniversary at the Hampden Road ground.

Newly formed this season, The Gate Inn have already made their mark in local football.

As well as reaching the Mont final, they’re also finalists in Sheffield FA’s Sunday Cup and are currently top of the Rotherham and District Sunday Football League (RDSL) premier division.

A hat-trick from Jordan Pilling in the Montagu Cup semi-final against Scawthorpe Athletic helped The Gate Inn secure a 4-3 win to secure their place in final during their inaugural season.

But manager Craig Hawthorne is no stranger to the competition. In 2024, he won the Montagu Cup with former side Park View FC. He’ll be hoping his leadership will help The Gate Inn become the first RDSL team to win the Montagu Cup since 2019.

Their opponents, Wickersley CC, have also had a strong cup run. They ousted current cup holders Westville from the competition with a 2-1 win in the semi-finals after taking an early lead three minutes in.

They’re currently fourth in the Blades Super Draw premier division and will be hoping to make history as the first Blades Super Draw team to win the Montagu Cup.

The final kicks off at 11am on Easter Monday, 6th April at Hampden Road, Mexborough S64 9JN.

Entry is £4 for adults, £2 for under 18s and over 65s. Children under 11 go free if they’re attending with a paying adult.

All monies raised goes to the Mexborough Montagu Hospital’s Comfort Funds, with the annual competition having raised almost £20,000 in the last five years.
