For many of us, Christmas is wrapped up in traditions — family meals, decorations and the comforting feeling of knowing where we belong.
For young people who have left the care system, however, Christmas can be a very different experience. The transition to independent living can bring challenges and, without the family networks many of us take for granted, the festive season can be particularly lonely.
That is why the Barnsley Care Leavers Christmas Dinner is such a special initiative.

The project brings over 20 care-experienced young people together at Christmas for food, company, presents and the chance to enjoy a celebration surrounded by people who genuinely want them to have a memorable festive season.
The Barnsley Care Leavers Christmas Dinner was set up in 2018 by Beth Goodliffe who wanted to create a community in her hometown for young people like herself who were leaving the care system.
Every year, Beth and a group of volunteers make the magic happen by arranging a surprise venue, decorating the room in full festive splendour, cooking a Christmas meal, and arranging transport for all the guests. Each young person also receives a meaningful gift.

The emphasis isn’t simply on providing a meal. It is about creating the kind of Christmas memories that so many of us associate with family — laughter, thoughtful presents, good food and, perhaps most importantly, feeling that someone cares.
Fundraising helps make the event possible, supporting the cost of the Christmas meal, gifts and the practical arrangements needed to bring everyone together. They’re hoping that the generous people of South Yorkshire will once again donate money or time to help them put on such a special day.
