Help the homeless with HARC Sheffield

Homelessness is on nobody’s Christmas list.

But as the cost of living crisis bites, and more people are forced to choose between eating, heating or keeping a roof over their heads, thousands of people in Yorkshire will spend the festive period sleeping rough, in hostels, or temporary accommodation.

One Sheffield charity has spent the last 35 years making sure that homeless and vulnerable people have a safe and warm place to spend their Christmas Day.

Homeless and Rootless at Christmas (HARC) was set up in 1989 to fill the gap left by similar services closing between Christmas and New Year.

They provide hot meals, welfare and health checks, and companionship to around 150 people per day during the festive period.

Last year, they dished out 1,862 meals and 900 takeaway bags between Christmas Eve and New Year. But this year, the charity says it will return to its original ethos of opening on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Guests who join the volunteers at Victoria Hall in the city centre receive a hot breakfast and lunch and a takeaway supper. But as well as the food, they also receive a warm welcome, company, and something to do during what can be a cold and lonely time of year.

They have an open-door policy where everyone is welcome, and guests can spend the entire day there if they like.

HARC is supported each year by the generosity of the public who donate their time and money to the project.

Volunteers come from all walks of life and bring invaluable skills, enthusiasm and experience.  If you have a caring nature, are non-judgemental, a good listener and can maintain confidentiality, you too could get involved.

Volunteering opportunities include socialising with and welcoming guests, helping to cook and serve food, providing services such as hairdressing, dentistry, and healthcare, and running arts and crafts activities.

They are also always looking for toiletries and clothing donations, especially menswear, to give out to their guests. Donations can be dropped off at Victoria Hall (Monday-Friday 10am-4pm).

Or you can donate money to keep the project going.
