This summer, Thorpe Hesley and High Green Cricket Club celebrated a very special milestone when, on Thursday 16th July, a women’s team represented the club for the first time.
The ladies welcomed Thorncliffe & Wentworth Cricket Club for an exciting softball match, played in great spirit and cheered on by friends, family and club members.
Batting first, the eight history-making THGCC women put a strong 293-3 on the scoreboard. Thorncliffe & Wentworth replied with 337-2 to take the win, but on this occasion the result was very much secondary.
The real victory was seeing women step up to the crease, pull on the THGCC colours and make cricket a game for everyone.
THGCC itself was born from a partnership, formed in 2014 through the merger of Thorpe Hesley Cricket Club, established in 1904, and High Green Village Cricket Club, established in 1999.
Now, more than a century after those first cricketing roots were planted, the women’s team is helping write the next chapter.
The women’s softball team began in 2024, with many players having never held a cricket ball before. In just two years, they have gone from learning the basics to representing their club under the lights, proving it is never too late to try something new and cricket doesn’t have to be a sport you grew up playing to be part of it.
But this is only the first over. THGCC wants to see more women and girls pick up a bat and take to the field. Whether you’re an experienced player, returning to cricket, or completely new to the game, there’s a place for you in the team.
So, if you’ve ever fancied giving cricket a swing, now is the time to step up.
Women’s training takes place on Monday evenings 5:30–7pm at the Smithywood ground. In winter, it moves indoors to Firth Park Academy in Sheffield.
