Explore Rotherham in a new light this summer by taking part in a free guided heritage walk led by Rotherham District Civic Society.
With a focus on some of the town centre’s historic buildings, the walking tour highlights the architecture and stories that often go unnoticed in everyday life,

The society launched their popular guided tours two years ago to give both visitors and residents an historical time travelling experience.
Led by volunteer tour guides who give their time and knowledge for free, the two-hour tour takes a leisurely stroll from Clifton Park down to the town centre and is fully accessibly for all levels of mobility.
Learn about the history of buildings like the Civic Theatre, the old and new town halls, Chapel on the Bridge and Rotherham Minster, the Imperial Buildings, Blue Coats and Ivy Cottage, and the oldest building in Rotherham, the Three Cranes on High Street which was built in 1470. The tour also encompasses other well-loved landmarks such as the Four Clocks, plus the cenotaph and Roman ruins in Clifton Park.

At each of these historical points, the tour guides will explain how people from Rotherham changed history and how the town became a thriving hub during the industrial revolution.
The society is a not-for-profit charity, so while the tours are free they do encourage voluntary donations if you enjoyed your experience. All monies raised goes back into the society to continue their work in preserving the heritage of the town.
They are also keen to welcome new volunteers, so if you have a love of local history and could talk to people about this, get in touch to become a tour guide. Full training is given and the volunteers work on a rota basis.
Upcoming dates for the free guided tours are as follows:
Saturday 16th May, 6th and 20th June, 18th July, 1st and 15th August, 5th and 19th September.
Meet at 1pm at the Roman ruins behind Clifton Park Museum.
