When someone you love can no longer get out and about as easily, knowing they have somewhere safe, friendly and stimulating to go can mean the world.
For families across Barnsley, that reassurance is now being provided by The Old Courthouse Day Centre CIO.
The newly established independent charity began operating the day centre in June following the closure of the former BIADS day centre, ensuring that a valued service – and an important part of many families’ routines – can continue.

Based at the Old Courthouse, the centre provides a welcoming place for older people living with dementia or health conditions, as well as those experiencing loneliness and isolation. Members can socialise, build confidence and independence, and take part in activities that bring purpose and enjoyment to their day.
Led by manager and founder Ryan Heckler, the team provides personalised support alongside a varied programme including music and movement, reminiscence, arts and crafts, baking, games and gentle exercise. Members can also enjoy freshly prepared meals, make new friends and become part of a supportive community.
The benefits extend to families and unpaid carers, too. While their loved one is at the centre, carers have valuable time to rest, work or manage other responsibilities, with the reassurance that they are safe, happy and well cared for.
Amelia Hewitt, whose father lives with frontotemporal dementia, said the centre has had an enormous impact on their family.
“Dad now has something to look forward to, and it has given him a real sense of purpose, routine and belonging. Seeing him come home smiling means so much to us. Knowing he is somewhere he is safe, happy and genuinely enjoys attending gives us invaluable peace of mind.”
Ryan said the charity’s aim is to support both members and their families, giving carers the opportunity to rest, work or manage other responsibilities.

The centre was made possible with essential support from Liddy’s Solicitors Ltd, who are based in the same building and had seen first-hand the difference the service made to members and families.
The charity is now welcoming new members while continuing to build links with local services, community groups, volunteers and businesses.
No formal referral is needed, and families, carers and professionals can contact the centre directly to arrange an informal visit to look around the centre, meet the team and discuss the person’s needs, interests and any support they may require.
